Understanding Nicotine Strength: A Beginner’s Guide

Nicotine strength is usually the most confusing number on the box for anyone new to vaping. Here’s a plain-language explanation of what it means and how to think about choosing one — this is general information, not medical advice, and you should make your own decision based on your own experience.

What the number actually is

Strength is listed in milligrams per millilitre (mg), and it tells you how concentrated the nicotine is in the e-liquid — not how “strong” the flavour is, and not a measure of intensity or harm. It’s simply a concentration figure, the same way you’d read the percentage on a bottle of any concentrated liquid.

Why the “right” number is personal

There’s no single correct strength for everyone. What suits you depends on factors like your prior experience with nicotine products (if any), how often you plan to vape, and simply what feels right to you when you try it. A strength that feels right for one person can feel completely different for another.

A general way to think about it

  • New to nicotine entirely: Many people start at the lower end of the available range and adjust from there — but this is a personal decision, and it’s worth trying the lowest option first if you’re unsure.
  • Switching from another nicotine product: It often makes sense to start at a strength closer to what you’re used to, rather than guessing.
  • Already have a preference: Stick with what you know works for you — there’s no need to change strength just because a new product is available.

A few practical notes

Different device types can make the same mg number feel different in practice — a disposable and a pod system don’t always deliver nicotine identically, even at the same listed strength. If you’re switching device types, treat it as a bit of an unknown rather than assuming it’ll feel exactly the same.

If a strength doesn’t feel right, it’s fine to try a different one next time — there’s no obligation to stick with your first choice.
